Q*Bert Rebooted – A Blast From The Past!

Q*Bert RebootedOne of my childhood memories takes place on the way home from school.  I knew I didn’t have much time.  I checked my pockets and made sure I had my small collection of quarters.  I looked around me to make sure my parents weren’t nearby and watching me.  I then snuck through the doors of the Mini Mart and on back to the arcade.  There in the arcade was the holy grail of games, Street Fighter II!  And it was out of order…  Desperate to spend my quarters before my mother found out I was wasting time at the arcade.  I searched for any game that would do.  I found a game I had never heard of, it featured a funky Pac-Man looking guy with an elephant’s trunk.  The game was Q*Bert.  I inserted a quarter in to the coin slot and I promptly died.  Over and over again.

My mother never found out about the time I wasted that day but the memory lives on.  When I saw Q*Bert pop up on my NVIDIA SHIELD I jumped at the opportunity to get it.  The original Q*Bert came out in 1982 and has relaunched in various forms several times since then.  In 2014 Q*Bert Rebooted launched for iOS, Android and Steam.  Since then it has been released on several other devices and platforms.  Fast forward to today and NVIDIA has released Q*Bert Rebooted: SHIELD Edition.

Q*Bert Rebooted brought an updated look and feel to Q*Bert while maintaining the original concept and styling of the original game.  There were new enemies, new levels, unlockable characters and it even came with the original Q*Bert!

Q*Bert Rebooted: SHIELD EditionThe SHIELD edition adds even more features!  The graphics have been massively improved with a new particle and lighting system and physically based shaders.  They even redid the audio with eight catchy tracks by Env (and be careful, they will get stuck in your head!).  The game has been optimized for playing on the SHIELD Android TV with a controller but also supports touch input for the SHIELD Tablet or SHIELD K1.

I have enjoyed playing the game immensely and couldn’t put it down.  At one point I was taking a quick break from playing.  I came back to find my wife had stolen the controller and was having a blast playing the game.

The game is quite fun but there is one downside to the game, the replayability.  The levels are quite repetitive as you have to complete each map three times before you can progress to the next level.  Sometimes the levels are the same map just with different colors.

So in conclusion I would say Q*Bert Rebooted is a lot of fun.  I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to relive their younger years.  I would however give them the warning that it could become old after a few hours of playing.

Q*Bert Rebooted: SHIELD Edition is now available for $5.99 on the Google Play Store.  There are no in app purchases and it is completely ad-free.

Don’t have an NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV to play on?  Don’t fret, you can still play Q*Bert Rebooted (minus the extra perks from NVIDIA).  It is free on the Google Play Store but comes with ads and in-app purchases.  Better yet, order yourself the SHIELD TV today!
